Planet
The Planet has been a topical focal point of the fashion industry for quite some time, debating the stride for sustainability and the endeavor to be ethical. Through the journey of the 80 billion garments produced each year, the fashion industry contributes vastly to the c02 emissions in the atmosphere as well as 85% of textiles that are sent to landfill . Rimarcikova, 2023)
When exploring the journey of garments one must contemplate Distribution, Design, Production, use and end of life. (Alison Gwilt) The fashion industry is to blame for 20% of global industrial water pollution. (Alison Gwilt, a personal guide to sustainable fashion)
Sustainability, a word that circles the planet and holds the power to change the future. Sustainability can depend on the production of garments, including the chosen eco-friendly fabrics. Sustainable fashion is considerate of the impact on the industry
As well as focusing on the absurd working conditions of the workers producing the garments. Purchasing pre-loved fashion allows for pieces to be appreciated, reworn and loved. The materials used to produce garments can result in extremely damaging effects to the planet. Polyester is the most widely used synthetic and is predicted to dominate future synthetic fiber growth. (Rimarcikova, 2023) It is believed that we can not have sustainable change without education, people must learn about the damages and how they can prevent them. (Patrick mcdowell, 2023, future of design)
To put into perspective the damage of garments to society it takes 2700 litres of drinking water to create 1 T-shirt, which is enough drinking water for one person to last 3 years. (Rimarcikova, 2023)
Circular economy prevents the idea of garments resulting in wastage and pollution, regenerating nature, circulating products and materials. ( Alison Gwilt) Supporting the idea that clothes should never result in waste and the new disposable outlook of garments has created a culture of wear it, post it, throw it away. Instead the materials can be reused, recycled or refurbished creating a constant circle of evolution. Rather than the garments becoming landfill and creating c02 from their existence. Contributing to the deconstruction of the planet and the hope for a sustainable future in fashion.
The most influential and predominant SDG of the fashion industry would be SDG 12; responsible, consumption and production. Out of the 80 billion garments produced each year an extremely low 12 percent of the material used to produce these garments is recycled. Subsequently demonstrating a need for a different outlook of the fashion industry, one that supports the circular economy and looks to improve the planet rather than destroy
A sustainable future of fashion is one that the planet should strive for and aspire to achieve.
