PLANET

Fashion Means Business is articulated through four pillars, which are put in to place to create a framework for a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry. The four pillars are Planet, People, Profit, Purpose.

Planet refers to the environmental impact of the fashion industry on the planet. It aims to reduce the negative effects of fashion on the planet, such as pollution, waste, and resources.  Behind the luxury of fashion there is a dark side which can be massively harming to the planet. The high demand of fashion is impacting the planet by filling up our land fill sites and polluting the air and oceans.

The fashion industry is one of the most wasteful industries, the industry is responsible for a shocking four to 10 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions yearly (British Vogue, 2022). If no drastic changes are made it could lead to irreversible changes to our planet.  Sustainability is a very important consideration to avoid this. Sustainability is a balance between the environment, equity, and economy. Through the responsibility of others it is creating fashion by taking responsible and sustainable measures.

Bite studio is a great example of a sustainable fashion brand.

Bites produces statement items which are kind to the planet, they do this is by setting sustainable aims. They strive to minimise their environmental impact by using eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, using responsible production processes and ethical supply chain measures. Bite create fashion which is stylish and sustainable. In Bites sustainability report they state the goals they follow which includes SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production Patterns)–to achieve by 2030.Over consumption is brands over producing products which are not bought and therefore being marked down in price and then even being left unused and sent to waste. Over consumption can be monitored by brands looking at the demand of the products and not having products left over which are not sold. Sustainable consumption is regulating the amount of clothes needed for buyers. If clothes production is not regulated this could affect the number of products that brands are left with which ultimately can be unwanted and adding to land fill waste.

Overall, the fashion industry is failing to acknowledge the ethics and sustainable measures which need to be put in place to manage these problems. Systemic problems need to be addressed or huge damage will be left to our planet.
