Planet
The planet is home to almost 8 billion people and almost every 1 out of that 8 billion people at some point in their past or future lifetime will harm the planet in some sort of way.
Some may argue that it is impossible to completely have a circular economy and that some of our day-to-day lives harm the planet without our knowledge. Fashion is one of the planet’s biggest polluters and the industry’s production processes, fast fashion brands and consumer habits contribute to the environmental downfall. “The fashion industry accounts got about 8-10% of global carbon emissions and nearly 20% of water waste” (BBC, 2020). Every time consumers buy even just one pair of jeans they use roughly 1,800 gallons of water, by looking around a room and counting how many people are wearing a pair of jeans you can work out how many gallons of water are flooding that one room alone.
Zara, one of the biggest high-street brands globally is also one of the biggest polluters globally. Producing ‘more than 450 million clothing items every day’ (EARTH.ORG, 2022) the brand is single-handedly polluting the planet with consumer habits encouraging it by cultivating their cheap prices and mass amounts of stock. The majority of Zara collections are trends or pieces produced before, which consumers can find either second-hand or will eventually chuck away once ‘out of style.’ On the other hand, Stella McCartney Is known for their sustainable image, their most recent runway Summer 2024 show in Paris was “Crafted from 95% responsible materials, it is our most sustainable edit to date.” The brand believes the ‘future of fashion is circular,’ and hopes to guide the way for other brands and set a positive example of how we can save our planet and how it needs to be implemented before it’s too late. (Stella McCartney, 2023).
The planet is a community, those who are killing the planet are also those who are saving the planet while remaining naive to the situation. Most people do not realise what they are doing is killing the planet which is why learning is one of the biggest and the first step into moving to become a greener planet. The inner development goals teach people that as individuals they can make a difference, and the more people learn, understand, and grow the rest of the planet can follow.
