My favourite fashion brand: Miu Miu.
Miu Miu, a fully owned subsidiary of Prada, is an Italian high fashion women’s clothing and accessory brand headed by Miuccia prada and headquartered in Milan, Italy. The business was first established in 1992 and publicly launched in 1993 as a more youthful, playful and affordable alternative to their sister brand Prada, with a cowgirl-themed collection of fringed suede jackets and patchwork prairie skirts.
Starting in 1994, the brand showed its collections in the US for three seasons and then went on to first show their womenswear collection during Paris fashion week.
Miu Miu is now a globally recognized luxury ‘it brand’, crowned brand of the year by Lyst in 2022, following a period that was defined by the brand’s viral mini skirt. Other items, such as its ballet flats and Wander bag, played into current Gen Z trends, like ‘indie-sleaze’ and ‘balletcore’ resulting in highly anticipated shows during fashion week seasons.
In 2020, Miu Miu released an ‘Upcycled by Miu Miu’ limited collection of vintage dresses from the 1940s through the 1970s that have been reinstated, built around precious, anonymous finds ultimately promoting minimising waste, an extremely prevalent issue in society.
To me, Miu Miu produces effective, useful pieces whilst still maintaining a luxurious impression, their classic wardrobe staples elevate simple everyday wear. Their recent autumn/winter 2023 collection has largely proposed an elegant, sober and somewhat formal wardrobe, described as pocket psychology: when times are tough, we dress appropriately.
